The diagnosis always ended up being the same: intoxication and poisoning. The direct association that these professionals made was withthe abusive use of pesticides, mainly endosulfan and glyphosate.

However, there are records of malformations from several years before, when the boom of the biotechnological package “transgenic + agro-toxins” began.

There were also many cases of deformed animal births and - most tragic - also of babies who were born with congenital malformations.

Common traits

What the specialists warned is that the effect of agrochemicals is also noticeable in malformations that appear in newborn animals.

One of the most notorious cases was that of a female dog thattwice gave birth to puppies with cleft lip, which is a common malformation caused by chemical herbicides.

Cleft lip is a congenital defect consisting of a cleft or separation in the upper lip that is caused by the incomplete fusion of the maxillary and nasomedial processes of the embryo and is one of the most frequent birth defects (approximately, it constitutes 15% of congenital malformations).

In the last delivery, the bitch had ten puppies, of which six were born with a cleft lip, a pattern that was repeated in the neighborhood where the owner of the animal lived, with children who were frequently born with this problem.

Another malformation occurred mainly in dogs, calledpyometra (disease caused by an infection in the uterus and accumulation of secretions and pus inside). This is produced by several factors but in general it has a hormonal basis.

The “chanchofante” of Pergamino

Pergamino is a Buenos Aires town located in the heart of agricultural activity, currently so dependent on pesticides.

A neighbor in the rural area of this city - according to statements collected by the Primera Plana portal - reported deaths and animal malformations right in the area where a red plane unloads a type of harmful product on her field and that of her neighbors.

According to what this Parchmentian neighbor named Marcela said in statements to the Primera Plana portal, the fumigations are carried out every 3 or 4 months and for this a ground applicator (mosquito) or a red plane that also operates in all neighboring towns.

Marcela, who is dedicated to pig production, assured that the death and malformations of her 8 piglets allow her to associate them with the product used in the last fumigation: theacid 2,4-D, which was used by the plane that had passed 7 days before the stipulated time for the birth.

As more neighbors find out about this case, they are also encouraging themselves to share their experiences. One of them found out and presented the copy of the "cheater", as illustrated in the photo.

This little pig was born with malformations that give it a trunk and a pair of ears similar to those of an elephant, which is why it was baptized with that name. Although the sow gave birth normally, the calf did not survive.

What is 2.4 D?

Widely used to control broadleaf weeds and some herbaceous and woody plants, the2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) acts as a plant growth hormone regulator.

This herbicide is mixed with others to be applied by fumigation, diffusion or spraying. It can persist in the soil from one day to several weeks after application.

The herbicide 2,4-D was developed during World War II and was officially registered in 1948 in the United States, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

During the Vietnam War, he was one of the components of Agent Orange. As of 2009, more than 1,000 products contain 2,4-D and they are available for public use, according to the National Pesticide Information Center.

It is mainly used in crops of wheat, barley, rye, oats, corn, sorghum, potatoes, sugar cane and rice, among others. It is not used on soybean plants but it is used in the so-called “chemical fallow”, to eliminate weeds with poisons before sowing.

"After glyphosate, it is the most widely used herbicide in Argentina," says the newspaper Página 12.

2,4-Dceased to be manufactured in the United States and in Europe, due to its high risk characteristics and currently its main producers are China, Brazil and Argentina, as well as Mexico and Indonesia among others.

Days after the controversy of the "chanchofante", exactly on December 21, the Minister of Agroindustry of the Province of Buenos Aires, Leonardo Sarquís, signed the resolution through whichthe use of the acid herbicide 2,4-D is restricted throughout the province, in its butyl and isobutyl ester formulations, during the period from October 1 to March 31 of each production season.

During that period -which corresponds to the time of year set for its volatilization- the restriction extends to the entire Province including any application modality: air, land or manual.

The measure takenwill enter into force as of October 1, 2017, after a period of communication of the measure to the producers who use these products.

In this sense, the province of Buenos Aires still lagged behind others that already implemented similar resolutions for the restriction or total prohibition of the use of this substance. Among them, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Entre Ríos and Córdoba.

How many animals have to die intoxicated or be born deformed to put a definitive "stop" in this situation? Or as Dr. Verzeñassi well illustrated in an interview with the newspaper La Epoch Times: “If they are going to talk in economic terms, how much money do we have to earn to justify that a relative or one of us is born with a cleft lip, has a lymphoma, leukemia or suffer from a disease such as hypothyroidism? ”he asked.

Life and health are priceless.
