90% of seabirds around the world have ingested and currently accumulate plastic waste in their digestive system, according to an estimate made by a team of researchers from Australia and the United Kingdom in a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) of the United States. The presence of waste from bags, packaging, synthetic fabrics and many other plastic objects will extend to 99% of seabird species by 2050, causing significant damage to their health and reproduction, emphasize professors Chris Wilcox, Erik Van Sebille and Britta Denise Hardesty in their studio.
